Sommer was born May 25, 1908 in Minneapolis. He grew up in Rush City, Minn., where he began his banking career at the Rush City State Bank. Soon afterward he moved to Minneapolis to work for the Midland National Bank. He graduated from the University of Minnesota, and later attended the Minnesota College of Law for two years and graduated from the Stonier School of Banking at Rutger's University.
